An instrument rating is generally the “next step” after earning your initial private pilots license. It allows you to fly through the clouds, and it helps you to become a better, safer, more precise pilot.

The FAA minimums to earn an Instrument Rating in an Airplane include 40 hours of instrument flight or simulated instrument flight (10 hours of which can be in a BATD, and 15 hours of which must be with a CFII), 50 hours cross-country time (Part 61), a knowledge test, an oral exam, and a practical flight test with an FAA Examiner.
